Central Texas Land Restoration Before
Before: Heavy yaupon undergrowth due to fire suppression reduces light penetration. This has resulted in less preferred forage and low plant diversity. The ladder fuels prevent a safe prescribed burn. (Camp Swift, B.S.A.; Bastrop)

Land Restoration Services

Ecological restoration of land to its natural landscape is called land restoration. This should not be confused with landscaping but it is the process of returning the land, or repairing the land to create a safe habitat for humans, wildlife and plants. The most common cause of the damage is through human interference in the natural cycle of the land and causes such as farming, ranching, pollution, deforestation, mining or neglect. The active practice of fire suppression has caused overgrowth and the spread of non-native species that also damage habitats, erode soil and cause the land to be unsafe or unusable.

Many land owners resort to clear cutting, bulldozing or simply don't do any land restoration practices that improve the land because it is expensive, time consuming or difficult.

Natural Texas uses a three-phased approach. First, we work through a detailed plan with the landowners that take into account what their intended use for the property is. Such as hunting, wildlife management or just enhancement. Second, after the plan has been approved, we approach the work in phases so as to not do more damage to the soil or the wildlife. In addition, our Forestry mulchers add the organic matter back to the property, which provides protection from soil erosion, and helps protect disturbed plants, insects and animals by providing some moisture-loss prevention. The third thing we do is help the land owner improve the property value by enhancing the valuable assets such as old growth trees, pines and natural vistas by knowing and caring about what is important and adding that extra value of being on the property and knowing how to work the land.  We don't set out to remove trees, we set out to improve the land, and sometimes that involves removing brush and trees and sometimes it means leaving important cedars as shelters and habitats.

Our land restoration and preservation expertise comes from over 30 years of experience in

  • Stabilizing and fixating the soil
  • Working with the grasses, trees and brush to provide protection such as shelterbelts, windbreaks and woodlots.
  • Understanding how to improve/enrich the soil by planting nitrogen-fixating plants and the addition of organic matter to damaged soils.
  • Selective and strategic clearing of brush, cedars and other trees.
